Book Recommendation: Happy Birthday, Rosa Parks!

Today would have been Rosa Parks' 100th birthday (she lived to be 92-years old). If you're interested in a beautifully illustrated picture book about her part in the Civil Rights Movement, Rosa, illustrated by Bryan Collier and written by Nikki Giovanni is a good choice.

While this book does perpetuate the myth that Rosa's being "tired" was her reason for not giving up her bus seat to a white passenger, it is worth a read for the gorgeous illustrations and narrative about the Civil Rights Movement. However, I would recommend that anyone reading this to children (or even just for yourself, if you don't know much about her story), do additional research. Be sure to discuss the fact that Rosa's refusal to give up her seat was intentional--a planned act of resistance--which, I believe, only lends credence to what a vital role she played in the Civil Rights Movement.
